10/9/2011 We Were Slaves

Getting God's grace frees us to give generously. However, we often run back to the very thing(s) from which God freed us. Where God wants to take us is better than where we've been. It won't be easy. Running back to your stuff is safe. It's known. It's comfortable. It will also kill you in the process.

9/4/2011 From Garden to City

God did not design a finished creation. Instead, God made the world in such a manner that He would have people not only add to His work, but also make progress in moving it toward completion. He made us, in other words, to participate with Him in His creative work, and to live in such a way that we are productive, valuable, and able to make a difference.

8/28/2011 A Challenging Demand

Sometimes God appears to take back what He has given. Yet, God wants us to trust Him. Even more, He acts in such a way that it appears our faith is tested (at times, to the limits). Yet, these "tests" are the means by which God causes us to grow, and mature, and realize we live by His Word, not our own ways. It is all about trusting Him as THE ultimate source of security, joy, and meaning.

6/26/2011 A Safe Place

After the Fall, the world changes. It changed from being a place of safety to a place where there would be fear, insecurities and pain. Yet, even in that new world, God provided a measure of safety. Today we need to see God and His church as a "safe place" where we, as His people, can take refuge.

6/5/2011 The Very Beginning Part 3

Always accusing and always blaming, and we rest much more comfortably when the focus (and blame) is on others. We resist the self-examination that can show us our need and drive us to Christ. Instead, it is easier to point to the failures and sins of others - and keep responsibility at arms length. Always protecting ourselve means we experience broken relationships.

5/22/2011 The Very Beginning Part 2

We have such a strong drive, not to be who we were creatd to be, but to be more. Instead of being satisfied that we are Image of God, and God's marvelous creation, we are bent on being gods ourselves. We think we can live apart from and without God. This bent or rebellion started, for humanity, back in the Garden.

1/2/2011 Politically Incorrect Three-Letter Word

God wants us to be self-aware. I hear people talk about the need for the church to talk about sin. A book even asked, "Whatever happened to sin?" Do we find that those who want to talk about sin have a difficult time seeing their own? What is sin and why does God hate it so much? How are we to respond to God's feelings toward sin; and toward our own reflection on our sin and failure?

9/5/2010 Facing Life Difficulties

There is no sugar-coating it. Life is difficult. But we are given a promise that what is thrown at us can motivate us to depend, not solely on our own resources, but on God Himself, who has promised to give Himself to us. He has done so, in Christ.

Larry Edison's Sermons Larry Edison
8/29/2010 Remembering God's Handiwork

It is so easy to forget our God, and live in such a way that we think all we are and all we have is because of our own doing. It is so important to remember that our God, whether we see Him or not, is intimately involved in our lives and in making us who we are and providing what we have. We kill our pride and are properly humbled when we recognize God's grace and Christ's lordship in and over our lives.

Larry Edison's Sermons Larry Edison
8/22/2010 Wrestling with God: Fighting the Battle of Pride

Scripture calls us to wrestle with those "things" which cause us to stray away from our God. We're called to take note of "issues" in our life and wrestle with them by turning to Christ. Instead of getting our meaning, identity and value from ourselves, the battle is won as we see our dignity and value as God-given. Believe it or not, one "thing" we can distort is "religion" and make it a matter of pride rather than a humble relationship with God throught Christ.

4/25/2010 The Battle of the Gods

We live in a world where we battle for control; in every relationship. We even battle God whether by outright disobedience, or through efforts at manipulation. Even as we battle for control, God, by His grace, allows us to lose that battle with Him. He maintains control, and works in us to break free from that demand for control, so that by grace, we will submit to Him.

Larry Edison's Sermons Larry Edison
4/11/2010 Can You Feel?

We are told over and over again, "don't trust your feelings." We're even reminded that the Christian life is a matter of fact, not feeling. But the Scripture is replete with stories, images, and words designed and intended to make us "feel." So, while feelings should not control, they are part and parcel of the Christian's life, and what it means to be a person made in God's image. God wants you to feel!

Larry Edison's Sermons Larry Edison
3/7/2010 After God's Heart

9/27/2009 All or Nothing

Is there even a slight possibility that you could deceive yourself concerning your eternal destiny? In James 1:22 it says "Be doers of the Word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." Are you sure you have faith? What does faith involve? Is it simply giving assent to certain intellectual facts? Is it just saying the right words or even feeling sorry for your sin? What exactly does faith involve? Faith involves commitment!

9/6/2009 A Driven People

We are all driven or motivated by something. What drives you? As Image of God, we are mirrors of God. We are driven to work, create, make a difference, be known, leave a mark. We are driven for recognition and glory. That is not necessarily "bad." However, this "drivenness" certainly can be distorted.
